Rei is the cool and silent character in Evangelion Anime. She basicly created/clone from Shinji Mother and with unknown reason, he hate when Shinji say rubish about his father. But in the end, she love Shinji when He help her during Angel 05 attack!

Rei that Shinji Meet in the first until end are not the same.Rei(1st) killed by Ritsuko Akagi! Then replace with Rei 2 until near end of series. Then get replace with Rei 3, the last because Ritsuko kill other Rei Clone!
